figure legend: Three-dimensional reconstruction of a Golgi tendon organ in extraocular muscles of bovine. Left side. The Golgi tendon organ is sheathed by a capsule of perineural cells (grey). Inside the Golgi tendon organs, collagen bundles (green) and muscle fibers (auburn) are present . A myelinated nerve fiber (yellow) enters the organs and divides into several branches. Right side. The upper part of the capsule is removed. The collagen bundles are rendered transparent.

scientific background: In skeletal muscle Golgi tendon organs consist of a capsule of perineural cells. Collagen bundles pass through the organ and muscle fibers are attached outside to the collagen bundles. We could show that Golgi tendon organs in bovine extraocular muscles differ from those in other skeletal muscle. In particular four different types can be distinguished in bovine extraocular muscles (Blumer et al. 2003).

method:
Specimen were embedded in epon and ribbons of serial cross sections were cut with a histo jumbo diamond knife (Blumer et al. 2002). For 3D reconstruction we used the "External Marker based Automatic Congruencing" (EMAC) technique (Streicher et al. 1997, 2000).
