About the Division

Erhard Wintersberger

The Institute of Molecular Biology was founded in 1978 by the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and the Ministry of Science and Research. It was the first Institute of this discipline that was created in Austria due to the forsight of the Medical Faculty concerning the importance of this field for medical research, diagnosis and and treatment of patients. Up to 1992 the Institute was located in the building Währingerstraße 10-Wasagasse 9, 1090 Vienna. In summer 1992 the Institute moved into the newly established Campus Vienna Biocenter Dr. Bohrgasse 9, 1030 Vienna. Since the beginning of the year 2000, the Institute of Molecular Biology is a Division within a larger Institute, the Institute of Medical Biochemistry, which also includes the former Institute of Biochemistry and the Institute of Molecular Genetics. The foundation of the larger Institute conforms with the requirement for the establishement of larger Institutes put forth in the University law of 1993.
The faculty of the Division, payed by the University consists of the chairman, 5 assistant professors and 1 assistant, 3 technical assistants and a secretary. Almost every one of the scientific staff has spent a period of between 1 and 3 years for post doctoral studies in the United States, Canada, Sweden or Switzerland.
Research at the Division deals with aspects of growth- and cell cycle control in animal cells. This includes work on transcriptional regulation, chromatin structure and signal transduction. Research in the Division is largely funded by grants provided by the Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF), by the National Bank, by the Ministry of Science and Research and by private funds. Money for consumables comes to more than 70 % from grants, the rest is provided by the University. Several groups have post docs and every group has a several Ph.D. and Diploma students coming from the Natural Sciences Faculty. All of these are exclusively paid from grant money. The Division is heavily involved in teaching of medical students in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medical Genetics and Cell Biology. In addition all members of the Division supervise coursework of medical students and provide introductory lectures to these courses. Research-oriented training is provided for Biochemistry and Biology students during specialized course work, diploma work and Ph.D. (Dr.rer.nat.) thesis work (see the reports of individual groups).
Members of the Division have collaborations with several groups in Europe and in the United States and they participate actively in the seminar programme of the Campus Vienna Biocenter. At the same time, many members of the Division are invited to give seminars at other Universities in Europe or to give talks at International Meetings.
