Liebe Medibibler,

Subject: Re: CD Rom Consumer Health Encyclopedia

I've just become aware of an impressive product called "HouseCall" from AMI
(Applied Medical Informatics). It is not a CD-ROM product, but software
loaded onto your hard disk, and has both Windows and Macintosh versions. We
were given it on trial and have now ordered it ($99.95 retail) for our
Consumer Health Collection. (We also have Health Reference Center from
InfoTrac.)

It allows consumers to enter personalized symptom information to receive
possible diagnoses, to get information about drug interactions, and to create
personal medical records. But the best part for libraries is the
"Encyclopedia". It has full-text information on 1,100 common diseases, 215
symptoms, 515 medical tests, 2,890 drugs, 394 poisons, plus descriptions of
60 common surgeries and 200 illustrations. Users can move easily from topic
to topic by simply clicking on words. Print-outs are easily made.

The product is made by the same company that produces "Iliad", a
symptom/diagnosis analysis program for physicians. They claim that
"HouseCall" was "developed in consultation with 40 practicing physicians and
13 health care professionals in 23 medical specialties." Regular updates are
promised.
