Subject: Two new ways to access NLM publications

The National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce two new ways to access
NLM publications. NLM publications including Fact Sheets, bibliographies,
manuals and newsletters have been available via anonymous ftp and the NLM Gopher
for some time. The methods described below will allow additional users to
access these files.

1. E-mailing files: Users with only e-mail access to the Internet may now use
this method to obtain files available on NLM's anonymous FTP server. To obtain
information about this service, send an e-mail message to:

files@mailserv.nlm.nih.gov

Leave the subject line blank. In the body of the message place the commands:

BEGIN
send help
END

Questions and comments about the NLM e-mail file server may be directed to:

admin@mailserv.nlm.nih.gov

2. Telnet to the NLM Gopher: A telnet option now provides limited access to the
NLM Gopher for users who have a telnet program but do not have a gopher client
program. The option allows users to view selections, e-mail ASCII (DOS) text
files, and explore other NIH gophers. It does not allow viewing or e-mailing of
other types of files such as WordPerfect files or access to online services such
as Locator. To use this service:

Telnet to gopher.nlm.nih.gov
login as gopher

Questions and comments about telnet to the NLM Gopher may be directed to:

admin@gopher.nlm.nih.gov

To which Groucho Marx replied (in _Memoirs_of_a_Mangy_Lover_, 1961 I believe),
"What this country needs is a good five-cent nickel."

(Of course, some 30+ years earlier, in _Animal_Crackers_, he advocated an
eight-cent nickel so you could buy a three-cent newspaper and get your
nickel back as change).

Dear fellow Medlibbers:
Can anyone direct me to finding the amount of overlap of periodicals
indexed between ISI's CD-ROM version of Science Citation Index and
MEDLINE. So far I have only found the numbers of journals indexed
in each database: 3,772 for MEDLINE and +3,200 for SCI. Any help
in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Kerri Christopher kchris@nomvs.lsumc.edu

Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides now offers 11
new subject-oriented Internet resource created by student specialists at
the University of Michigan's School of Information and Library Studies.
Similar to last year, students have identified and evaluated Internet
information resources, and organized them in topical guides in ASCII
format. These ASCII guides are now available via the Clearinghouse for
Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides. Unlike last year, these guides
will also be published in HTML format for World Wide Web in December.
Watch this space for details when they are announced.

The Physicians' GenRx International, the popular drug compendium, is
now available via telnet.

Physicians' GenRx International is the most complete drug index
ever developed. Through GenRx, drug information can be accessed by
any brand name ever used, by the generic name and by any category.
Multiple drugs can be tagged and searched for interactions amongst
the entered list. Additionally, specialized category terms are
maintained, including HCFA reimbursement codes, FDA approval date,
patent expiration date, FDA's evaluation of new molecular entities,
and relative sales volume of the drug.

To access Physician's GenRx International:
Telnet to "genrx.icsi.net"
Login: "genrx"
Password: "genrx"
Select the appropriate terminal emulation, then login as
"guest."

UNIX and VMS versions of Physicians' GenRx International will soon
be available. We are seeking hospitals and large clinics to
participate in beta testing the on-site version of Physician's
GenRx International.

If you are interested in participating in the beta test, please e-
mail info@icsi.net (subject: GenRx).

I'd like to thank all those who contributed information on the medical conferences, Here's a summary for the list,

I have recently started to post announcements of the Academy programs in various places. I've found that there is no one best place yet. One moderated group is bionet.announce and I use news.announce.conferences. The sci groups, i.e. sci.med are also useful. Medlib folks are also great at taking announcements and posting them in their institutions.

There was announcement of a private company that has started listings just for CME course --gopher to metronome.com -- it looks like a potentially useful service when there are many more users.
