AF020: Fe/Mn superoxide dismutase
- Pfam domains
- PF00081: Iron/manganese superoxide dismutases, alpha-hairpin domain
- PF02777: Iron/manganese superoxide dismutases, C-terminal domain
Biochemical properties
The function of the members of this protein family is to destroy the radicals that are normally produced within cells and are toxic to biological systems by catalysing the conversion of superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen. Three evolutionarily distinct families of SODs are known, of which the Mn/Fe-binding family is one.
Allergological significance
Mn-binding superoxide dismutases from plants and fungi were identified as cross-reactive allergens [1, 2].
