This group of serine proteases belong to the MEROPS peptidase families S1 (chymotrypsin family, clan PA(S)) and to the peptidase family S6 (Hap serine peptidases). The chymotrypsin family is almost totally confined to animals. The enzymes are either secreted directly or packaged into vesicles for regulated secretion . Members of the Hap family (Haemophilus adhesion and penetration) play a role in the interaction with human epithelial cells.
Allergens from the trypsin family constitute three groups of mite and cockroach allergens . Group 3 mite allergens are trypsins and are major constituents of mite faeces. Trypsins are also found in cockroaches . Group 6 mite allergens are chymotrypsins and show no cross-reactivity with group 3 allergens. Group 9 allergens exhibit a collagenase activity. Trypsin-like allergens are also found in insect venoms . The dog allergen Can f 5 is an arginine esterase that belongs to this family. in addition, bovine thrombin was shown to cause allergic reactions during surgery and hemodialysis .
