AF039: Ribosome inactivating protein

Pfam domains
PF00161: Ribosome inactivating protein
PF00652: Ricin-type beta-trefoil lectin domain

Biochemical properties

This protein family consists of bacterial and plant toxins that inhibit the protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells by inactivating the 60S ribosomal subunits.

Allergological significance

RIPs from several plant species were described to bind IgE from sera of individuals with occupational contact to these proteins [1].
