This family contains pollen-specific proteins of about 30 kDa in size and unknown biological function, which were found only in grass species from the subfamily Pooideae . A ribonuclease activity was reported for Phl p 5 from timothy grass .
Group 5 grass pollen allergens are major allergens, which elicit IgE responses in 65% to 85% of grass pollen-allergic patients . Basic members of this family were originally temed group 9. Group 6 grass pollen allergens are major allergens of about 13 kDa, which are similar and cross-reactive to the C-teminal domain of group 5 allergens, but lack their N-terminal domain.
