9: Midterm results after combined heart and kidney transplantation. Kocher AA, Khazen C, Ankersmit J, Ofner P, Schlechta B, Ehrlich M, Wolner E, Laufer G; Transplantation proceedings 1999 Dec;31(8):3181-3. Pubmed Link Simultaneous double-organ transplants comprising various organ combinations have become a frequent procedure. Because of expansion of recipient selection criteria for heart transplantation (HTX) and kidney transplantation (NTX), combined heart and kidney transplantation (HNTX) has recently achieved clinical relevance. Good short-term graft and patient outcomes after combined HNTX were documented in the first few recipients reported in the literature, leading to an even more aggressive pursuit of this combined
procedure. However, there is virtually no information available on midterm outcome after HNTX. Considering the limited supply of organ donors, it is of paramount importance to determine those patients who benefit from a simultaneous transplantation of both organs to use the scarce resources judiciously. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the intermediate results of HNTX at a single center in terms of patient survival, rejection rates, and infection episodes. a PDF of this paper can be provided upon request |
