The Department was founded by Robert Trappl in 1977 as an institute of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 2004, it became part of the Center for Brain Research at the newly founded Medical University of Vienna. Since 2007 the department is headed by Werner Horn.
You will find us in the first district of Vienna, on the historic grounds of the "Schottenhof".
The research of the department focusses on different areas of Artificial Intelligence, among them Cognitive Modelling, Intelligent Data Analysis, Knowledge-Based Systems, and Natural Language Processing.
The department offers lectures in Artificial Intelligence on an introductory as well as an advanced level. With regard to particular study programmes, we offer courses for students of Medicine and Medical Informatics, as well as for students of the Middle European Master Programme in Cognitive Science.
