Neuronal Cell Biology - Head: Michael Kiebler

Michael Kiebler and his first two students, Martin Köhrmann and Kavish Hemraj, started as part of the Dotti lab at the EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany in 1997. Here, they co-discovered the mammalian Staufen proteins and subsequently began to investigate Staufen-dependent mRNA transport into dendrites of hippocampal neurons. In 1999, the Kiebler lab moved to the Max-Planck-Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, Germany, where the continued to study the molecular mechanisms of dendritic RNA transport and local protein synthesis in rat hippocampal neurons. Since 2005, the Kiebler lab now resides in the CBR.

A long-term goal of the Kiebler lab is to understand the molecular basis of synaptic plasticity. In this context, we are interested how individual synapses, the point of contact and communication between neurons are altered throughout the lifetime and how this contributes to our ability to learn and remember.
