Department of Dermatology
Chairman: Professor Herbert Hönigsmann, MD
Rooted in a great historical heritage the Viennese Department of Dermatology has maintained its tradition as one of the worldwide leading institutions in Dermatovenereology, evolving from the historical descriptive qualities to a modern genetic-pathophysiologically orientated field. It is one of the leaders in the field of clinical and experimental dermatology where the famous saying from “bench to bedside” is one of its guiding principles. This implies the effective transfer of knowledge gained in basic research to clinical practice in order to thus improve the diagnostic and therapeutic approach in day to day clinical practice. In addition to research and patient care, the joint competence of the faculty lies in its teaching responsibilities of future physicians in the medical school.
In the area of basic research the department of dermatology has maintained a constant high level in its publication rate in peer reviewed journals; this has helped maintaining its prominent role among the leading institutions in the international arena. Major areas of interest and excellence are dermatological oncology, immunology and photodermatology. The department cooperates actively with numerous academic institutions on a world wide basis as well the pharmaceutical industry.
The Department of Dermatology at the Medical University of Vienna is the largest reference centre for patients on a national basis; yearly more than 100,000 patients are seen on an outpatient basis with over 5,000 admissions. Within these activities the entire spectrum of dermatological diseases is covered. For diagnostic purposes, all known standard methods are within reach and available. In addition to its general outpatient clinic there are over 27 special clinics devoted to specific disease entities and their particular therapeutic requirements.
