The Department of Epidemiology was founded in June 1993.
Scientific output since then: 306 publications (December 2010), including 217 (71%) papers in peer reviewed journals (see also our publications list).

 Descriptive Epidemiology:

  • Analysis of the incidence, prevalence and mortality of selected diseases in Austria.
  • Cancer trends
  • Population based survival rates of selected cancers
  • Evaluation of the opportunistic screening for breast cancer and for cancers of the cervix, the colon, and the prostate
  • Case study of maternal mortality (confidential enquiries)
  • Temporal and spatial trends of perinatal and infant mortality
  • Prevalence of diseases in primary care (Morbidity Register Austria), in cooperation with Department of General and Family Practice
  • Self assessment of attitudes for cancer in Austria (including prevalence of mammography and cervix screening, PSA-testing, Haemoccult and skin screening), in cooperation with the Austrian Cancer Society

 Analytical Epidemiology:

  • Molecular - epidemiological studies of lung and prostate cancer, in cooperation with the Institute of Cancer Research
  • Austrian cohort study on diabetes in children, in cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics

  • Research on pseudo R2 values, in cooperation with the Core Unit for Medical Statistics and Informatics
  • Epidemiological analysis of the controlled colo-rectal cancer screening project in the province of Burgenland
