Current Project
Transcultural and Ethnomedical Aspects of Sexual & Reproductive Health and Women's Mental Health
As a lecturer and research assistant at our department my work focuses on transcultural aspects of women & health with special emphasis
on sexual and reproductive health issues and women's mental health. Ethnic minorities in Western societies and the development of specific,
gender-sensitive health care services that are based on "cultural awareness" are in the center of my research activities.
The documentation of New Zealand Maori's new initiatives in Public Health Care services, especially the integration of traditional
therapies (Rongoa Maori) in New Zealand´s health care system is the main target of my current research project (1999-2002), that has
been granted by the Austrian Science Funds (FWF). A related topic is the impact of New Zealand's postcolonial society on Maori mental
health and the psychotherapeutic effects of culture-linked therapies. Ethnobotany in New Zealand and Western Samoa are also of main
interest. Hereby the women's contemporary use of traditional plant medicine in the area of sexual and reproductive health will be questioned.
Due to the demand for more cross-cultural research on the issue of menopause, a closer look on Maori women's views on menopause and
their physical and social body will be taken during the current field research study (November 2000 – April 2001).
The outcome of this study in New Zealand should serve as a model of good practice for the Austrian Public Health system, as specific
services for ethnic minority women (immigrants and refugees) in Austria have to be developed. In the context of international migration the
subject of Female Genital Mutilation is also of evident significance and this topic has been of high actual relevance in Austria.
