The MedUni Vienna has chosen cancer research as one of its main focuses of research. It is not only because excellent scientific work is carried out in this field by the clinics involved, but also because a particularly high number of patients with malignant diseases are being treated at the Medical University of Vienna and the General Hospital. It is with this in mind that two internationally renowned study groups (ABCSG, CECOG) have their focal points at the MedUni Vienna.
The combining of competences from different medical disciplines is an essential factor in both the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers and also in oncological research. It is with this in mind that a cancer treatment centre established according to international standards was founded with the Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna in 2010. Through the combination of all of the disciplines in patient care which are involved in the treatment of cancer, teaching and research, as well as liaison with self-help groups and related institutions, the efforts made in the fight against cancer are all brought together in a coordinated and focused manner.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna is managed by a coordination committee and is based on the cooperation of oncology departments, institutes, and research facilities of the MedUni Vienna. These clinics and partners form the CCC Council, which meets regularly and discusses relevant oncological matters.
The external Advisory Board provides the exchange of scientific information between the CCC and external institutions and is composed of international experts in oncology
.
The cancer research initiative was established in 2005 by the Chairperson of the University Clinic for Internal Medicine I, Professor Christoph Zielinski MD and his colleagues Professor Michael Micksche MD (Head of the Institute for Cancer Research) and Professor Ulrich Jäger MD (Head of the Clinical Department for Haematology and Haemostaseology). The goal of the initiative is to acquire the necessary funding for research, which on one hand enables the renowned cancer research of MedUni Vienna to remain competitive at an international level and on the other, to keep the university's research activities independent of various lobbies.
