The metabolism field has a long tradition at the Medical University of Vienna - from Johann Peter Frank (1745-1821) and his initial description of diabetes insipidus across Arthur Biedl (1869-1933), the author of the standard work "Innere Sekretion [Internal Secretion]", through to Wilhelm Falta (1875-1950); in addition to this, MedUni Vienna is able to demonstrate considerable expertise in this field of research.

MedUni Vienna was able to record an overall impact factor of 810 on the basis of first authorships during the years 2000-2003 with simultaneous acquisition of more than EUR 3 million in funding - an exceptional result. During the same period personnel who were working on metabolism related issues received the Bertram Award on one occasion and the Novartis Award - twice nationally and once internationally.
The field of research is to be further expanded in combination with nutritional medicine.
