Mission Statement

The Institute for Hygiene and Applied Immunology of the » Centre for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology is a new interdisciplinary enterprise of the Medical University of Vienna having its history in the former » Institute for Hygiene and the Department for Molecular Immunology. The Institute’s mission statement is a comprehensive understanding of the prevention of diseases starting from the biounderstanding and the analysis of water, the most important substance for the human body by the experts of water hygiene, via the analysis, control and advise for hygienic preparation of food by the expert for food hygiene, the testing of disinfectants and sterilizators by the Medical-technical Hygiene Unit, the diagnosis of pathogens in particular bacteria by the Infectious Immunology Unit, to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the natural intrinsic prevention system of the human body, the immune system, by the Molecular Immunology Unit. By combing the interdisciplinary expertise of the Units, we are aiming to develop novel hygienic measures as well as to identify novel immunomodulatory substances as basis for innovative therapeutic strategies to treat infections and immunological diseases including autoimmunity and allergy.
