The PARSONNET-Score derived from large
international statistics tries, on the basis of preoperative risk factors, to assess and
predict the chances of cure and fatal outcome of patients with coronary and heart valve
operations.

For cardiac intensive patients in 1997 (bypass operations and valve operations), there is
shown a lower value for the actual rate of mortality (observed), than for the expected one
(predicted) (see figure above), although the large number of patients with a high score
(20+) underlines the remarkable severity of disease in this patient population (see
below).
