The 'Research Institution for Intensive Therapy' is a Common Office of the University Clinic of Anaesthesia and General Intensive Care and the University Clinic of Surgery in accordance with § 56 of the University Organization Law (§ 66 UOG-93). This common institution has its base in our Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (as part of the Clinic of Anaesthesia and General Intensive Care) as well as in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery (as part of the Clinic of Surgery). The aim of the Research Institution is the interdisciplinary organization of teaching and research, proceeding from the central area of the ICU 13B2 (cardiosurgical intensive care unit; Headed by the Department of Cardio-thoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia & Intensive Care; Beds-assignement to the Department of Cardiaothoracic Surgery).

The Research Institution for Intensive Therapy is giving - also in the future – substantial impulses for an integration of intensive medical research into the speciality of anaesthesiology and surgery, especially by means of a traditionally close cooperation with the Institute of Medical Computer Sciences (IMC), as for example:
Creation and development of a Patient-Data-Management-System serving as a forerunner within the General Hospital, programming a Performance-Documentation-System (see next page) for electronic documentation of data and performance, statistical analyses of scientific and patient-related data, quality control (ICDOC), circulatory research, ventilation projects (lung model), expert systems, "decision making".

In January 1989, Univ.Prof.Dr.W.Haider was infinitely nominated by the Federal Minister as the Head (Chairman) of the Common Office 'Research Institution for Intensive Therapy'. The equivalent future utilization of the assigned resources is of great importance in regard of intensive medical research in the field of cardiovascular diseases:
