Since 2004 the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), founded in 1953, is a division of the Department of Medicine I of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.
The mission of the ICR is to elucidate the causes and characteristics of cancer by stimulating the development of more effective strategies for prevention and treatment of the disease as well as advancing research and education in order to protect and promote the public health.
The research is focusing on the detection of basic processes of cancer development and propagation, as well as on external influences on cancer development and genetic, molecular and cellular alterations in the organism. The translation of the experimental findings leads to the development of proceedings for prevention, diagnosis and therapy of cancer. Multidisciplinary strategies are the backbone of present-day Cancer Research.
The Institute of Cancer Research of the Medical University Vienna, unique as a centre covering all aspects of multidisciplinary research in this field in Austria, acts as a national and international competence and reference centre for experimental cancer research.
