Arthrocententesis and lavage of the temporomandibular joint

Dysfunctions of the stomathognathic system, which includes the temporomandibular joints, the masticatory muscles and the occlusion, are very common among Austrians. According to statistics, 60-70% of adults have subjective symptoms or objective pathological findings in the temporomandibular joints. About a tenth of those affected go and see a doctor. In many cases, temporomandibular dysfunctions- creaking, rubbing, blockages, often in combination with pain in the joints an in the masticatory muscles- can be treated conservatively. Physiotherapy, therapy with occlusal splints, acupuncture, medication and a few other therapeutic methods are available to us. If the conservative methods of treatment prove to be unsuccessful, we now have minimally invasive surgical therapeutic possibilities at our disposal, which are replacing the open temporomandibular joint surgery.
