Head and throat tumors include tumors of the facial cranium,
the food passages, the airway and the salivary glands, as
well as tumors of the skin in the head and throat area. Despite
the good chances for early recognition of cancers in this
organ system, the diagnoses of cancers in advanced stages
predominate.
In Austria, approximately 10% of all new cases of cancer per
year are carcinomas in the head and throat area. The age distribution
peaks between 50 and 70 with a male predomination.
Tumor surgery within maxillofacial surgery has experienced
great progress in recent decades, which has in part been born
from new developments in anesthesiology. In most cases, there
are nowadays no more time limits to operative procedures.
This makes prolonged tumor resections possible, even in anatomically
complex regions of the facial cranium, and allows the surgeon
to cover the defect during the same operation. The reconstructive
measures in most cases are managed through microvascular tissue
transfer. Through the expansion of surgical therapy the survival
rate can be increased and functional and aesthetic results
improved.
