Die Universitätsklinik für Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie der Medizinischen Universität Wien gilt als eines der weltweit führenden Zentren für den Einsatz von computerassistierter Chirurgie und Telemedizin in diesem Fachgebiet. Ein erfahrenes interdisziplinäres Team aus Naturwissenschaftlern und Medizinern beschäftigt sich laufend mit der Einführung von technischen Innovationen in die klinische Routine. Obwohl natürlich die Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie im Mittelpunkt unserer Arbeit steht, können wir im Rahmen zahlreicher nationaler und internationaler wissenschaftlicher Kooperationen grundsätzlich das gesamte Spektrum der biomedizinischen Technik abdecken. Prof. Ewers und Prof. Schicho präsentieren in Dallas die neuesten Entwicklungen in der computerassistierten Gesichtschirurgie
Auf Einladung von Prof. William H. Bell, einem der weltweit renommiertesten Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgen, referierten Prof. Ewers und sein Hochtechnologie-Experte Prof. Schicho im November 2009 auf dem „William H Bell Lectureship Accelerated orthognathic surgery and increased orthodontic efficiency: a paradigm shift“ am UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (Texas) über die Anwendung sogenannter „Surgical Templates“ in Verbindung mit 3D-Computerplanung, Simulation und Navigation. Schwerpunkt im Vortrag von Prof. Ewers war die neueste State-of-the-art Technologie in der Dentalimplantologie: Hier werden sämtliche Vorteile der Computerplanung mit der unkomplizierten Handhabung von Bohrschablonen kombiniert. Dadurch gelingt die implantologische Versorgung der Patienten mit zuvor unerreichter Präzision.
Prof. Schicho präsentierte in seinem einstündigen Vortrag dem internationalen Fachpublikum zunächst den neuesten Stand der computerassistierten Gesichtschirurgie zur optimierten Rekonstruktion von knöchernen Strukturen mittels individualisierter Gesichtsimplantate (Rapid Prototyping Verfahren und 3D-Objekte aus PEEK (Polyetheretherketon).)
Erstmals skizzierte Prof. Schicho in diesem Vortrag auch Perspektiven und Herausforderungen im Einsatz von Hochtechnologie in der Haartransplantationschirurgie.

Festsitzender Zahnersatz kann die Lebensqualität für den Patienten enorm verbessern. Unbeschwert „zubeißen“ zu können bedeutet uneingeschränkten Genuss bei der Mahlzeit.
Die Bedeutung der Dentalimplantologie zeigt sich nicht zuletzt an den zahlreichen Innovationen und Konzepten, die auf diesem Gebiet in den letzten Jahren entwickelt wurden.
Operation mit computerunterstützter Navigation
Die Positionen der Implantate, die in den Kieferknochen gesetzt werden und später das „Fundament“ für Ihre neuen Zähne sind, werden bei uns am Computer geplant. Dabei berück-sichtigen Prothetiker insbesondere die Beschaffenheit des verfügbaren Knochens. Die Implantate werden so ausgerichtet, daß eine möglichst günstige ästhetische, mechanische und funktionelle Gesamtsituation erreicht wird.

Telemedizin
Telemedizin ermöglicht an unserer Klinik den Austausch von medizinischer Information in Echtzeit und damit die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit von Experten über alle geographischen Grenzen hinweg. Im Rahmen von interaktiver Telekonsultation können innerhalb kürzester Zeit komplexe chirurgische Planungsaufgaben von räumlich getrennten Teams bearbeitet werden. Durch Navigation und Robotik wird das Ergebnis der Planung während der Operation am Patienten exakt umgesetzt.
