The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMT) of the Department of Internal Medicine I
of the Medical University of Vienna is the largest bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant center in Austria and employs 55 individuals.
In 1978, the first allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was performed in our center; the first autologous BMT, the first BMT from an unrelated donor and the first allogeneic transplantation with reduced-intensity conditioning were performed in 1983, 1994 and 1999, respectively. In June 2009 the first coord-blood transplantation was performed at our
institution.
Since the opening of a special intensive care transplant unit in 1992, the number of transplants per year has risen markedly. Today, between 90 and 100 transplants per year are performed.
Transplantation from bone marrow as well as from peripheral blood derived hematopoietic progenitor cells has become an established form of treatment for many patients with hematological and oncological diseases with high cure rates.
In September 2008 two new BMT patient wards have been opened in the General Hospital of Vienna. They are located in the red tower of the General Hospital on level 21 and consist of the BMT Intensive Care Unit (21i) and the Posttransplant Ward (21J). Patients are now able to stay in friendly and bright rooms with a formidable view of the city of Vienna. The new patient wards also provide optimal working conditions for the BMT staff. In addition, a new Day Care Clinic is available for patient treatment on the 21st floor.
Significant advances in supportive care as well as in HLA-typing technologies and immunosuppressive treatment have led to improved survival rates and quality of life in transplanted patients. Our BMT Unit has been accredited for performing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants using stem cells from related and unrelated donors by the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
In spring 2004 the BMT Unit passed the ISO-Norm 9001:2008 certification after implementing an excellent quality management program.
In fall 2005 the BMT Unit of the Department of Internal Medicine I of the Medical University of Vienna received the certificate of excellence of the Joint Accreditation Committee of ISCT-EBMT (JACIE).
