4th FEBS Advanced Lecture Course Scientific ProgrammeOutline of the CourseDear Friends of the Gosau Course, Three previous FEBS Advanced Lecture Courses were necessary and sufficient to establish the tradition of a biennial "Gosau Course" on ABC proteins. Following that rhythm, I am now proudly announcing the 4th lecture course, ABC2003. The Federation of the European Biochemical Societies, FEBS, is the main sponsor of this exciting lecture course. Moreover, several contributions from pharmaceutical industry and non-profit institutions enabled the organization of ABC2003. This 4th Gosau Course shall cover all aspects of ABC proteins, both in normal and cancer cells, as well as their prominent roles in important genetic diseases. Leading scientists from all over the world and representatives of major pharmaceutical companies will also discuss the latest achievements in the field of ABC proteins operating in bacteria, fungi, plants, parasites and humans. We were able to commit numerous leading experts to participate as course lecturers, with many new faces attending Gosau. We are thus confident that ABC2003 will again be an outstanding lecture course with an exquisite scientific programme for all participants.
We are looking forward to seeing you all in Gosau, Austria Scientific ProgrammeThere will be 5 Symposia, each chaired by a leading scientist acting as a discussion leader. The chair shall also give an introduction to the topic of the particular symposium. Tentative List of Invited Lecturers and ChairsSymposium 1: Biogenesis, Trafficking & Processing of ABC Proteins
Symposium 2: Modulation & Regulation of ABC Protein Function
Symposium 3: ABC Proteins in Multidrug Resistance & Pharmacology
Symposium 4: ABC Genes in Physiology & Pathology of Disease
Symposium 5: Catalytic Mechanism & Structure of ABC Proteins
Finally, the course will be enriched by a Keynote Plenary Lecture delivered by Kazu Ueda. A scientist from the list of invited speakers shall deliver the Final Keynote Address to conclude ABC2003. Oral Presentations"Workshop Talks" of 20 minutes and "Short Talks" of 12 minutes will be delivered during afternoon and evening sessions by principal investigators and graduate students or postdocs, respectively. The SAB shall select all oral presentations based on submitted abstracts. Poster SessionThe poster session represents a vital part of the Gosau course. All abstracts not selected for oral presentations will be on display as posters during the entire course to give plentiful time for informal discussions among participants. Workshop on Animal ModelsA special 2-day workshop is devoted to the generation, use, as well as exploitation of animal models for basic and applied studies on ABC-mediated diseases. What have we learned so far from the use of animal models for human disease and what are we going to learn in the future? Hot Topic DiscussionOpen platform gatherings moderated by invited plenary lecturers and attending SAB members shall discuss recent developments and late-breaking stories from the ABC field. Industry Meets AcademiaParticipants from pharmaceutical industry and sponsors take advantage of informal opportunities to establish or intensify contacts to academic researchers on a flexible basis. Young Investigator AwardsAll abstracts submitted by graduate students or postdoctoral fellows as first authors are subject to scientific evaluation by selected SAB members. The best 6 abstracts will be awarded a surprise cash prize, the "Gosau Young Investigator Award", at the end of the course. TimetablesPlease note: A short Timetable, including all types of scientific presentations, provides a brief overview of this Advanced Lecture Course. Please note: You can download and freely distribute the ABC2003 First Announcement as well as the course poster as PDF-document.
