The Core Unit
for Medical Statistics and Informatics (MSI) supports research
at the Medical University of Vienna by offering expertise in the fields of Medical
Statistics and Informatics. Moreover, the MSI initiates and performs research
and technical development on various topics of Medical Statistics and Informatics,
mainly triggered by clinical research demands.
MSI also offers a wide range
of courses to students of Medicine, of Medical Informatics, and of Statistics.
In addition, Continuing Education courses are offered to physicians
on a regular basis.

History:
- The former Department
of Medical Computer Sciences (IMC) was founded 1973 and had been preceeded
by a computing center (est. 1966) of the former II. Department of Medicine
at the Medical School of the University of Vienna. The first head of this
department had been Prof. G. Grabner, followed by Prof. M. Schemper in 1992,
and by Doz. H. Grabner (2000 - 2003). From April 2003 until September 2004
Prof. M. Schemper was head again.
- The former Department
of Medical Statistics (and Documentation) - IMS – was founded in
1969 and headed by Professors F.X. Wohlzogen (1969 -1986), V. Scheiber (1986
- 1993) and P. Bauer (1994 - September 2004).
- On Oct. 1, 2004, the
Departments of Medical Computer Sciences and of Medical Statistics
merged under the designation Core Unit for Medical Statistics
and Informatics of the Medical University of Vienna. Currently,
Prof. M. Schemper is heading this Core Unit.

The sections and the joint office are located in the "Ostbereich"
and can be accessed from Spitalgasse 23 and also from the main hospital building
via a bridge at level 3 (at the east end of "Südstraße").
