The aim of the Section for Medical Expert and Knowledge-Based Systems of the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics, and Intelligent Systems at the Medical University of Vienna is to develop computer systems for broadly applicable computer-based medical decision support in the hospital, the medical laboratory, the physician’s office, and within telecommunication-based medical or health care information systems. These systems are designed to give expert-level, problem-specific advice in the area of medical diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and patient management. Expert systems capture and make available the knowledge of experts and—by applying this knowledge to patient data—emulate and assist the decision making behavior of medical and administrative personnel.

Research in medical expert and knowledge-based systems and the deployment of such systems becomes most significant in the broad realm of quality assurance and cost containment in medicine.

The work of our group covers methodological research, interdisciplinary clinical projects as well as collaborative work with local, national, and international research and industrial institutions.
