INTRODUCTION TO THE VIENNA READING CENTER
The Vienna Reading Center (VRC) was founded in 2005 as a subunit of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna. The intention of the Vienna Reading Center was to perform systematic scientific analyses of OCT images provided by the clinical sites within international multicenter studies and to forward the data to the sponsor for further analysis.
At the moment the VRC is managing 7 different multi-center trials from five different sponsors. The spectrum of applications has been extended from optical coherence tomography to color fundus photography, fluorescence angiography, microperimetry and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. We work together with approximately 1400 investigators in around 280 cities all over the world, with ca. 202 Clinical Research Assistants in about 400 Centres.
The VRC and its staff have got a lot of experience especially in optical coherence tomography now. This experience in combination with clinical studies at the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna could already be used in developing new protocols for spectral domain optical coherence tomography. With these experiences the VRC and its employees will be able to define new standards in ophthalmology. These standards concern not only results regarding new pharmaceutical drugs but also understandings how to use new technologies in different diseases.
The VRC was established by ophthalmologists at the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna with special expertise in imaging methods. This knowledge shall be used for education and training of physicians and scientists.
The VRC has grown to one of the largest Reading Centers in Europe. This position shall be consolidated.

With the experiences which the employees of the VRC could gain in the already performed studies, they will be able to define new standards in ophthalmology. These standards concern not only results regarding new pharmaceutical drugs but also understandings how to use new technologies in different diseases.
We continuously review the compliance with our objectives and take appropriate measures if we should not be able to reach these aims.
