The Biobank of the Medical University of Vienna and the General Hospital of Vienna (MedUni Wien Biobank) is located at the crossroads between basic and applied research, aiming to facilitate the establishment of novel biomarkers and of innovative therapies. As a central facility of the Medical University of Vienna, the MedUni Wien Biobank is committed to the principles of Good Scientific Practice and academic research.
Adherence to ethical standards is a fundamental precondition for excellence in clinical research. Hence, ethical review of underlying research proposals and informed consent of participants are key requirements for the establishment of biobank collections. Our responsible use of biomaterial and associated data also helps to comply with ethical requirements.
The integration of MedUni Wien Biobank into national (www.bbmri.at) and trans-national (www.bbmri.eu) research infrastructures paves the way to both, more comprehensive cooperation models, and greater validity and reproducibility by standardized and harmonized procedures.
