Central Plasticity after TMR
It is known, that amputation of the upper extremity causes changes in the cortical representation of the hand and functional networks. This effect is bigger for amputees with Phantom Limb Pain. TMR (targeted muscle reinnervation) surgery provides a reafferentation for the nerves of the (amputated) arm. Additionally, after rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting the patient is able to control an artificial arm while thinking about hand and arm movements. So reorganization of areas in the brain responsible for the processing of motor information is expected. Furthermore, it is planned to analyze if it is possible to predict therapeutic success based on these changes in the brain.
