In her presentation „Interleukin-2/anti-interleukin-2 antibody complexes expand T regulatory cells which protect against allergen-induced airway hyperreactivity“, Alina Neunkirchner introduced a new animal model for allergy research, double transgenic mice expressing a human T-cell-receptor and MHC, presenting and recognizing the immunodominant peptide of the major mugwort pollen allergen, Art v 1.
In this study, the increased production of regulatory T cells in vivo is achieved by the administration of the T-cell growth factor IL-2 in combination with an anti-IL-2 antibody. Expansion of regulatory T-cells before sensitization prevented development of allergen-induced airway hyperreactivity and reduced Art v 1-specific serum IgE.
Furthermore, similar effects were observed in a therapeutic setting. Taken together, these data give first insights into novel strategies for the prevention and therapy of allergic diseases.

These 24 presentations took place in 4 bright sparks workshops on 4 main scientific tracks of the congress: Adaptive Immunity, Innate Immunity, Immunological Diseases, Immunotherapy.
Each of the 24 bright sparks is awarded with 500 Euros.
