Prof. Lorenzo Moretta currently serves as Head of the Department of Immunology, Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù (Rome).
He is formerly Full Professor of General Pathology and Pathophysiology of the University of Genoa Medical School (1994–2015), as well as Scientific Director of the Istituto Giannina Gaslini (Genoa) (2000–2015). He is currently President of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS).
Professor Moretta’s research studies are considered seminal in the field of immunology. He first identified T lymphocyte subpopulations in humans, a discovery which helped lay the foundations for understanding immune system disorders such as immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases. At present, he continues to pursue basic and applied research in the area of tumor immunology, as well as bone marrow transplantation for the cure of high risk acute leukaemias and of selected immunodeficiencies.
He is the author of 620 publications in extenso, a total impact factor of above 3500, citations approaching 47,000 and an h-index of 115 (Google Scholar). Professor Moretta was for many years the most cited Italian researcher.
