COLLOQUIUM IN PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, INFECTIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY
Martin Herrmann is married and father of 4 children. He graduated from the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in Immunology in 1989 and subsequently habilitated in 1997. He serves as an extraordinary professor in immunology and autoimmunology at the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg since 2004. Furthermore, Prof. Herrmann is a visiting Professor at the West China Hospital of Medicine in Sichuan, China since 2015.
His interest in autoimmunity was recognized early on as Prof. Herrmann published a number of striking articles in autoimmune research in involving systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), apoptosis and clearance of apoptotic cells, the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and other neutrophil functions as well as research on musculoskeletal diseases like gout and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Noteworthy contributions of Prof. Herrmann to the scientific community not only include translational medical research, but also interdisciplinary aspects combining chemistry, physics or material science with life sciences.
His research led to nearly 400 original publications and review articles. His devotion to train medical students, life science graduates and bachelor/master students remains admirable and he is the speaker of 2 graduate schools at the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg.
