Harald Noedl appointed Associated Professor
Assoc.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Harald Noedl, MD, PhD, was born in Vienna in 1963. He did his MD at the Medical University of Vienna and graduated as an MSc and PhD from Mahidol University in Bangkok. Before joining the Medical University of Vienna in 2006 he worked at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He is currently the head of the Experimental Tropical Medicine and Field Research Unit at the Institute of Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine, Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology, and Immunology. The focus of his work is in poverty-related diseases in the 3rd World (especially malaria) and he has spent many years working in the tropics, particularly in Thailand and Southeast Asia. He is the principal investigator on a number of clinical research projects, director of the MARIB Research Center of the Medical University of Vienna in Bangladesh and is closely collaborating with the WHO. He is a board-certified specialist in tropical medicine. His work has traditionally been focusing on South and Southeast Asia (particularly Thailand, Cambodia, and Bangladesh) and more recently on northeastern Africa (Ethiopia and South Sudan). Building a bridge between research and humanitarian aid is a matter of particular concern for him, as is education and training of students and postdocs in tropical medicine as well as knowledge transfer with partners in the 3rd World.
