The work „CD4+ T cell lineage integrity is controlled by the histone deacetylases HDAC1 and HDAC2” was published in May 2014 in “Nature Immunology”. The authors, Nicole Boucheron and Roland Tschismarov (now postdoctoral fellow in Thomas Decker’s group at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories), made the main contribution to this work and share the first authorship. This study shows that the proteins histone deacetylase (HDAC) 1 and HDAC2 regulate the stability and identity of CD4+ helper T cells. In absence of both proteins, a cytotoxic CD8+ T cell program is up-regulated. These results provide a fundamental insight into the regulation and maintenance of cell identity in the immune system.
