The Emergency Department is the point were you can find help for all kinds of emergencies (exept: trauma, psychiatric emergencies, and emergencies of children).
It is clear to us that your attendance of the emergency outpatient clinic can be a load for you and your relatives. Therefore we strive to arrange your stay as as briefly as possible. Our team consists of experienced physicians and nurses, who are specially trained for emergencies. Everyone of us will strive to answer your questions conscientiously. Please don't hesitate to adress questions on your treatment to our staff.
At the Department of Emergency Medicine we can't offer a perment treatment for your problems. We can not substitute your family doctor (Arzt für Allgemeinmedizin). The physicians of the department can't provide medical consultation via the phone.
First Contact with the Department of Emergency Medicine
A nurse will record your problems and will assign you to the approriate subspeciality. Then you are asked to the counter (Leitstelle 6D - Notfälle) where the administrative staff will collect your personal data.
We ask for your understanding, that the order of examination is not according to your arrival at the department but rather according to the severity of your problems.
Examination
After administartion you will be seen by a physician. Please understand that special tests (laboratory examinations, x-ray, ...) take more time. Your time at the emergency department might be prolonged by various consultations of different specialists.
Treatment
It is our ambition that you will be seen and treated by a doctor within one hour. Should your medical condition change during your stay at the emergency department please contact a nurse or doctor.
Subsequent Treatment
The following options for subsequent treatment exist:
1. You will e admitted to the General Hospital of Vienna (AKH)
2. You will be refered to your family doctor
3. You will be refered to a specialist outpatient clinic
4. You will be transfered to a different hospital
You have the right to get copies of your treatment records, Which you will need for further treatment at your family doctor or specialist.
