Forensic medicine has evolved from the image of the ‘detective with a scalpel’ conjured up by crime novels and turned into a multi-disciplinary high-tech forensic science.
Research here includes both independent research and the adaptation, implementation and validation of scientific findings from other areas for specific forensic purposes. Forensic research is high-quality, university research which must be geared towards an international audience. Applied research is derived from specific issues of public authority (e.g. identifying people using DNA analysis, detecting poisonous substances, assessing adverse effects caused by drugs and medication in traffic-related incidents, etc.), which are not handled in this form by other fields of natural science.
