Prof. Peter Kraiczy studied Biology at the Goethe-University Frankfurt. Following graduation, he then began work on his dissertation at the Institute of Therapeutic Biochemistry of the University Hospital (1989-1995). Thereafter, he studied business administration and marketing in Frankfurt. He did his postdoc
at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Infection Control of the University Hospital in Frankfurt (1996-2002) and specialized in tick-borne zoonosis with an outstanding expertise in Lyme disease. In 2008 he received his Associate Professor in Infection Biology and is the official department head of research at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Infection Control. His workgroup mainly focuses on
immune escape mechanisms of Lyme disease spirochetes, in particular on the strategies developed bythe pathogens to overcome innate immunity by direct or indirect interaction with human complement.
Studies conducted by his workgroup also aim at identifying and characterizing infection-associated outer surface proteins thereby revealing more information on the molecular pathogenesis of Lyme disease.
Additional projects deal with the improvement of therapeutic, diagnostic and preventative strategies.
