The Research Unit has its origin in the independent research group Molecular Immunology that was founded by Prof. Stockinger on January 1, 1987, within the Department of Tumorimmunology of the Institute of Immunology of the University of Vienna. The head of the Department who supported this initiative was Prof. Walter Knapp, the chairman of the Institute was Prof. Carl Steffen.
