Herbert Auer had studied biology in Innsbruck, Austria. Between 1979 and 1990 he was an assistent, after his habilitation (venia docendi) in 1991 dozent in the Department of Medical Parasitolgy, Institute of Hygiene, University of Vienna. In 2004 he became leader of the Department of Medical Parasitology, received the title Associate Professor in 1997 and since the year 2009 he has been leading the working group of Medical Parasitology within the Institute of Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine, Medical University Vienna. He stayed several times abroad: 1981 in the „Bernhard-Nocht-Institut“ in Hamburg/Germany, 1984 in the „Reichsinstitut für Volksgesundheit und Umwelthygiene“ in Bilthoven/Netherlands, 1992 in the Royal Institute of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London/United Kingdom. In 1981 Herbert Auer entered the Board oft he Austrian Society of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology and worked as treasurer, secretary and president. Between 1997 and 1998 he was Member oft he Board oft he German Society of Parasitology.
His main fields are epidemiology and laboratory diagnosis of parasitic diseases in Central Europe in general and of helminthozoonoses in particular (i. e. echinococcosis, toxocarosis, fasciolosis, dirofilariosis). He published more than 200 papers (original papers, reviews, book chapters) and performed several hundred and presented papers more than 200 times at national and international conferences during the last 30 years.
