The course "Medical Physics" of the Medical University Vienna aims at physicists planning a career als certified medical physics experts in a clinical environment. The curriculum is compatible with the guidelines for certification from the Austrian Society of Medical Physics (Oesterreichische Gesellschaft für Medizinische Physik - OeGMP) and international guidelines for the theoretical education of medical physics experts.

The most important information on the course at a glance

The course is open for physicists with a MSc degree from a regular physics program on a university level; attendees with a BSc in physics may also apply, but have to finish their MSc degree before graduating from this course. Students must demonstrate a solid education in nuclear physics at a university level.

Students with an education in a related field with a very solid background in physics and mathematics may apply as well – detailed requirements are available from the organizers of this course.

The course is compliant with the education guidelines of the European Federation of Medical Physicists (EFOMP) and current drafts of EU guidelines for the education of medical physics experts. In order to obtain a board certification as a medical physicist, it may be necessary in some countries of the European Union to have additional practical training on the job.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants obtain the title „Academically Approved Medical Physicist“; more details are available from the organizers of this course.

The course lasts for six semesters and usually meets six dates per semester for two day blocks of lectures and practica (Friday and Saturday). For lectures, attendance is not compulsory and e-learning materials will be provided. However, the practica have to be attended in Vienna. Exams are held at the end of the semester.

In total, the course consists of 315 hours (56 ECTS) in lectures and 135 hours (12 ECTS) from practical lessons.
