A project by the team of Anastasia Meshcheryakova, Diana Mechtcheriakova and Peter Pietschmann was granted on June 5, 2020 by the Medizinisch-Wissenschaftlichen Fonds des Bürgermeisters der Bundeshauptstadt Wien/Stiftungsfonds zur Förderung der Bekämpfung der Tuberkulose und anderer Lungenkrankheiten for Special Topic: SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19.
The study is entitled “Tracing antiviral AID/APOBEC family in coronavirus-targeted tissues and cells: a systems biology-based study”.
The team wrote as prelude:” As the pandemic of COVID-19 affects each of our lives, our scientific work, our research, we come together as a Community to tackle these challenges on both the societal and research levels. We view the current situation as an opportunity to think, learn, re-think the research accents and to develop efficient ways to scientific discoveries towards understanding the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the virus-triggered asymptomatic versus heavily symptomatic responses. The gained knowledge is key for the development of a vaccine and new specific treatment options. Data scientists, in collaboration with clinical specialists and other researchers, are uniquely positioned to get closer to answer these questions by analyzing large data sets from shared Big Data scientific resources, extracting novel information and translating it to applied knowledge”. The study will analyze the role of APOBEC family members being the crucial intrinsic antiviral factors.
