Skin immunity and tolerance
The longstanding goal of our laboratory is to understand the development of the immune network of healthy skin.
In particular, we are investigating phenotypic and functional aspects of dendritic cells and keratinocytes under physiologic conditions.
A special focus of our laboratory is laid on the evaluation of the expression spectrum and functional capacity of pattern recognition receptors in the developing human skin.
In ongoing studies we are exploring dermal mesenchymal stem cells and their role in maintaining and regulating skin homeostasis.
Furthermore, we are establishing in vitro models to study immunity and tolerance to allergens in barrier-disrupted skin conditions and are currently characterizing immune responses elicited upon administration of vaccines against chronic diseases in participants of clinical trials.
The experimental strategies to address our research interests include cellular, biochemical and molecular approaches.
