Is there a difference between the PhD-programme Neuroscience and the PhD-programme medical neuroscience?
NO! However, this unique opportunity of selecting 18 PhD-positons is under the term “Medical Neuroscience PhD-Programme” and is part of the underpinning PhD-programme Neuroscience.
Can I apply before I receive my degree?
Yes, you do not need to have completed your degree at the time of application. However, you must obtain your final degree certificate by the end of June. If your degree certificate is not available at the time of your application, we kindly ask you to upload a copy of your latest academic transcript instead.
Do I have to have any specific English language exam qualifications or grades?
Yes, you need to upload a certificate of English proficiency (e.g. TOEFL). The official working language of the PhD-program and in the host research laboratories is English – this includes all discussions and seminars, both formal and informal.
Do I have to have a Master's degree?
No, you can also apply if you have a Bachelor's degree. However, in this case you must have completed a four year course, achieved a first class honors or a 2:1, and you should be able to demonstrate that you have acquired a significant amount of research experience. In addition, you have to document that your degree formally qualifies to enter a PhD or equivalent programme in the country where you have obtained your degree.

My referees have already written reference letters for me. Can I upload scanned copies of these letters instead of asking my referees to submit a reference online?
Yes, you can scan and upload the reference letters by yourself. We will contact the referees later. However, we will only accept the official reference form 2018: “referee_form_MedNeuro 2018”
Which documents do I have to upload to complete my application?

2. One single PDF consisting of:
- Scans of a proof of your doctoral study entrance qualification (English),
- Scans of degree(s) and intermediate certificates, if already obtained (English),
- Scans of transcripts of marks (academic record)
- Certificate of English proficiency (e.g. TOEFL)

What is the “proof of your doctoral study entrance qualification"?
The "proof of your doctoral study entrance qualification" is only required if you have no Master’s degree! If you intend to apply to our PhD programme with a 4 years Bachelor’s degree you need, form your university where you have performed the bachelor, the official statement that in your country your Bachelor’s degree would qualify you to enter a PhD programme. For example with a Bachelor’s degree from Austria, you cannot enter the PhD Programme in Austria, so you could not apply.
Do I need to have my certificates translated into English and authenticated?
There is no need to have your certificates translated or authenticated during the online application process. The official translation and authentication of the certificates and degrees is only required at a later stage for registration at the Medical University of Vienna.
Where do I find a list of open positions?
You can find the information concerning the projects, the PIs and their research units at the application site. Please read about the research activities of the various groups, and indicate at most three scientific fields/senior scientists (without a ranking) in which you would like to do your thesis research.
