How can I find a supervisor and a thesis projekt?
Hunting for a thesis project is like hunting for a job. There is no ready-made standard procedure, how student and supervisor come together. If you want to actively approach potential supervisors, please find on this homepage the research interests and the contact data of all Research Laboratories supervisors presently in the faculty of the thematic programs of Neuroscience.
Can I join the N094 program, while a grant application is in elaboration or under peer-review, but not yet awarded?
It does not make sense to formally enter the N094 program without a confirmed peer-reviewed project, even if a project application is planned, in elaboration, or under peer-review. Even if you admit to N094, it will not be possible to register this project under N094 (registration is required within the first semester). Without a definitely confirmed peer-reviewed project.
Can I perform my PhD with a supervisor not refistered in the list of supervisors for the PhD-program neuroscience?
There are two different aspects to be considered. First, does the suggested PhD-work fit into the PhD-program neuroscience? And second, is there a peer-reviewed project available for you work and are all legal requirements fulfilled? These issues should be discussed personally with the program coordinator in order to avoid later complications. If the research project fit into the program every researcher who is applicant of the peer-reviewed project related to the PhD-work can become either a Supervisor or a Junior Supervisor dependent on the experience concerning the supervision of PhD students. To become a (Junior) Supervisor, participation in the seminar "Betreuung von PhD-Studierenden" is an obligatory precondition. For participation, please register for the next seminar via MedCampus / PE-Seminare.&nbs
What is the difference between the PhD-program Neuroscience (N094) and the Applied Medical Science program Clinical Neuroscience (N790)
Both programs are focused on Neuroscience and both are entirely in English language. However, there are different requirements for the application this includes the requirement of a peer-reviewed project, salary, and the need to be first author of a publication in a top- or standard journal. It is important to notice that the work in the PhD program is always full time whereas there is the possibility to perform the N790 next to your contract as specialist.
What should be considered when selecting the thesis committee members?
Apart from your supervisor, you need two more committee members. Consult your supervisor to identify qualified candidates for the committee. Discuss and consider the following aspects:
- The committee members should be able to support you in all belongings as soon as there are any complications.
- The committee members might help you with new ideas to improve the project and should be close to the topic.
- The committee member might be a potential cooperation partner within the project
Preconditions are that they hold the "venia docendi" and that one of them is not from the unit, at which you elaborate your thesis (external member). A senior supervisor can at the same time be member of the committee. Approach selected persons with your request and, if they agree, outline your project to them. Ask one of these two members to act as your "mentor", who will be on your disposal to settle disagreements as may arise during the course of your work. Collect their signatures on the registration form. Their signatures confirm that you have defended your thesis plan.
What if I feel incapable of predicting the precise future course of my research?
The proposal form provides huge space to describe the plans and objectives of your work over the years. It is not necessary that you fill the whole space provided in the form. A few sentences may in your case be sufficient. Furthermore, it is in the nature of scientific research that interim results can drive your work in another direction than originally envisaged. Final success of your thesis will depend on scientific quality and not on whether you adhered to an originally planned schedule. The meaning of the proposal form is that you demonstrate and document that the intended project is sufficiently reasoned and is suited in dimension and content for a 3 years-doctoral program.
How do I find a senior supervisor?
A senior supervisor is required only, if your supervisor has the status of a "junior supervisor". The senior supervisor must be an approved supervisor in the program (find here names and status of all supervisors). Your “junior supervisor” will suggest a senior supervisor that might also be than a member of the thesis committee.
What is the “proof of your doctoral study entrance qualification"?
The "proof of your doctoral study entrance qualification" is only required if you have no Master’s degree! If you intend to apply to our PhD programme with a 4 years Bachelor’s degree you need, form your university where you have performed the bachelor, the official statement that in your country your Bachelor’s degree would qualify you to enter a PhD programme. For example with a Bachelor’s degree from Austria, you cannot enter the PhD Programme in Austria, so you could not apply.
