Dr. Niessner started his research about the role of inflammation in destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques leading to plaque rupture and thrombotic occlusion of coronary arteries. His research has focused on cellular immunity including type I interferon producing plasmacytoid dendritic cells and functional consequences of dendritic cell activation for cytotoxic T cells and for plaque destabilization. Meanwhile his focus widened to the pathogenetic role of the innate and adaptive immune system in other cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and arrhythmias.
Based on a training in epidemiology (MSc) his group translates basic research into clinical studies. Thereby they approach the field of personalized medicine individualizing therapeutic strategies based on a comprehensive evaluation of patient characteristics including biomarkers. Currently, his clinical research team is running studies on the prediction and outcome of postoperative atrial fibrillation (AFAN) and on the optimal therapeutic strategy in elderly patients with an acute coronary syndrome (SUPREAM).
