know-how and research interests:
I am clinical cardiologist and board certified in critical care medicine. In 2010 I was appointed director of the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging lab of the Cardiology Department.
My scientific field of expertise spans valvular heart disease, cardiovascular imaging, and heart failure, particularly heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
Together with my coworkers, we have established a “Fibrosis Program” which focuses on the quantification of diffuse myocardial fibrosis by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. The “Fibrosis Program” has recently also been supported by the Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF KLI 245, 2012).
Excessive fibrosis or extracellular matrix deposition is believed to be a major contributor to the impaired cardiac relaxation and stiffness that are the hallmarks of HFpEF. In addition to characterizing the myocardial tissue by CMR imaging, we have established a myocardial biopsy program for the validation of CMR results in the HFpEF population.
Other projects focus on the prognostic importance of diffuse myocardial fibrosis by CMR imaging in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery for mitral regurgitation, and in patients with aortic regurgitation.
