Admission for Supervisors

If you seek admission to become the supervisor of a thesis project in a doctoral program of Endocrinology, proceed as follows:

Supervision of a doctoral thesis at the Medical University of Vienna generally requires experience in an appropriate track record of scientific excellence as well as preceding participation in an introductive seminar. To become a Supervisor in a doctoral program of endocrinology, admission to the » faculty of the program is necessary.

Candidates, who are already enrolled as Supervisors in another doctoral program of the University can join the faculty via a facilitated admission procedure. Please contact the » program coordinator.

Candidates, who are not yet enrolled as Supervisors in a doctoral program of the University, but gained experience in the supervision of doctoral theses otherwise, can apply for admission as full Supervisor along the admission procedure described below.

Candidates without preceding experience can apply for admission as Junior Supervisor along the admission procedure described below. During a thesis project, the Junior Supervisor is accompanied by a Senior Supervisor, who needs to be a full Supervisor of the faculty and who takes responsibility for the project by providing experience and advice.

Employment at the Medical Uiversity of Vienna is not conditional for becoming a supervisor.

Admission Procedure for (Junior) Supervisors:

• Carefully check whether your track record fulfils all required criteria for admission. Note that » criteria for supervision of a project in program N094 differ from » criteria for supervision of a project in program N790.
• To become a (Junior) Supervisor, participation in the seminar "Betreuung von PhD-Studierenden" is an obligatory precondition. For participation, please register for the next seminar via MedCampus / PE-Seminare.
• Carefully fill in the » admission form for Supervisors or the » admission form for Junior Supervisors, as appropriate.
• Please send admission form, confirmation of seminar participation and the undersigned supervisor duties-form to the » program coordinator.
• The program coordinator will informally check the application and forward it for the attention of the curriculum commission for doctoral studies. The applicant will then be informed about the decision.

Contribution to Teaching in Courses:

Duties of supervisors include active contributions to the » lectures and courses of the doctoral program. This includes the obligations to occasionally:

• Chair a » Journal Club and a » Thesis Seminar, which are traditionally held in conjunction on Thursday afternoon
• Arrange a » Practical Seminar (summer term)
• Give a lecture in the » Basic Seminar (winter term)
• Visit the » YSA-Symposium (summer term).

Scientists, who do not supervise students, but who would like to make a contribution to teaching in the courses, can join in as Lecturers. Please contact the » program coordinator to explore the current options.
