Research Interests: In vivo studies of fuel metabolism, pathophysiology of hypoglycemia couterregulation in diabetes
MR spectroscopy is a unique tool to study substrate metabolism in humans. Without invasive sampling the concentration of different metabolites can be measured in muscle, brain, and liver. Thus, it becomes possible to study the changes of substrate metabolism during systemic modifications of insulin and glucose levels over a prolonged period of time. With advanced MR techniques such as saturation transfer even intracellular flux rats of metabolites can be quantified.
Human in vivo studies; clamp techniques (hypoglycemic, euglycemic) to achieve defined states of glycemia; in vivo MR spectroscopy to study glucose and substrate metabolism in muscle, brain, and liver
