The Competence Center Oral Biology is involved in dental research and training. The work is done in an interdisciplinary team with national and international cooperation, integrating academia and industry. The laboratory uses fundamental cell biology and preclinical models for the development of causal therapeutic strategies in regenerative dentistry. Gruber and his interdisciplinary group focus on bone regeneration with respect to osseointegration of dental implants and the consolidation of grafts and biomaterials, with particular emphasis on implant dentistry and periodontology. His expertise lies on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of oral wound healing and bone regeneration in health and disease. Gruber and his team have developed a strong research profile to reveal the clinical relevance of natural and synthetic molecules and biological fluids in dental research. They have published so far over 200 original articles (Scopus ID: 7102883530; orcid.org/0000-0001-5400-9009).
The research portfolio includes fundamental in vitro cell culture techniques with a focus on oral and bone cells such as periodontal fibroblasts, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Based on a broad range of methods for the determination of proliferation, migration, differentiation, signalling and gene expression, we test the reaction of cells to various biomaterials, bone transplants, saliva and bioactive molecules of natural origin. The portfolio further includes various preclinical models with a focus on bone regeneration and histological and µCT analysis.
